How to Identify a Font: 6 Free Tools Compared

You have a screenshot, a logo, or a photo of a sign, and you need to know what font it uses. Several free tools can answer that in under a minute when the image is clean. When it is not clean, they all fail in predictable ways, and knowing those failure modes saves you a lot of re-uploading.

Here are the six methods that actually work, what each is good at, and what to do when the answer turns out to be a font you cannot afford.

1. WhatTheFont (MyFonts)

WhatTheFont is the best-known image identifier. Upload an image, drag a crop box around the text, and it returns a ranked list of matches from the MyFonts catalog.

How it works: it detects letterforms in your crop and compares their shapes against MyFonts’ commercial library, which is one of the largest in the world.

Strengths: fast, no account needed, and very good with clean horizontal text in common commercial typefaces. If the font came from a major foundry, WhatTheFont usually finds it or lands within one or two visually identical cousins.

Limits: results come from a store, so every match links to a paid font, and free or open-source fonts are underrepresented. It also struggles with connected scripts, heavy distortion, and text under about 100 pixels tall.

2. Font Squirrel Matcherator

Font Squirrel’s Matcherator takes the same upload-and-crop approach but leans toward fonts you can actually use without paying.

How it works: upload an image, adjust the detection box, and it matches letter shapes against a database that includes Font Squirrel’s own free-for-commercial-use collection alongside commercial fonts.

Strengths: it can surface a free match directly, and it supports filtering by OpenType features. Font Squirrel’s catalog is hand-vetted for commercial use, so a match from their library is safe to act on.

Limits: the free catalog behind it is small (roughly a thousand families), so for anything outside that pool you get commercial suggestions or nothing. Detection is pickier about image quality than WhatTheFont.

3. WhatFontIs

WhatFontIs matches against a very large database that mixes commercial and free fonts, and it is the one identifier that explicitly tries to show you free alternatives next to paid matches.

How it works: upload an image, confirm which detected characters are which letters, and it returns matches. The character-confirmation step is manual but improves accuracy on messy images.

Strengths: the database is broad, it covers free fonts better than WhatTheFont, and the “similar free fonts” feature is genuinely useful when the real answer is a paid face.

Limits: the best features sit behind a free account, the interface pushes upsells, and the letter-tagging step takes a minute. Like all shape matchers, connected scripts need to be separated by hand first.

4. Fontspring Matcherator

Fontspring runs its own Matcherator, and for clean samples it is arguably the most accurate automatic tool available.

How it works: same upload-and-crop flow, matching against Fontspring’s retail catalog. It also detects OpenType features like ligatures and alternates, which helps distinguish near-identical fonts.

Strengths: high accuracy on quality images, tag-based refinement, and a catalog with clear worry-free licensing terms if you do decide to buy.

Limits: it is a store, so matches are paid fonts, and open-source families are mostly absent. If your mystery font is a Google Fonts family, Fontspring often returns a commercial lookalike instead of the actual answer.

5. Browser devtools (for fonts on websites)

If the font is on a live website rather than in an image, do not use an image tool at all. The browser will tell you the exact answer.

How it works: right-click the text, choose Inspect, and look at the CSS font-family value in the Styles panel. Better still, in Chrome open the Computed tab and scroll to “Rendered Fonts”, which shows the font actually used, not just the ones requested. Firefox has a dedicated Fonts panel that does the same.

Strengths: it is exact. No guessing, no lookalikes, and it takes ten seconds.

Limits: it only works for real text. If the “text” is an image, an SVG with outlined paths, or text baked into a video, devtools shows you nothing useful, and you are back to image tools.

6. Ask a human: font identification communities

When automatic tools fail, people who identify fonts for fun usually will not. Typography forums and font identification communities (Reddit’s font ID community, Typophile-style forums, and the long-running identification forum on dafont.com, a third-party site with hundreds of thousands of solved threads) handle exactly the hard cases: hand-lettering lookalikes, heavily stylized logos, blurry photos.

Strengths: humans recognize context, era, and foundry style in ways shape-matching cannot. Hard requests often get answered within hours.

Limits: it is not instant, there is no guarantee, and you should check whether the text is actually a font at all. Many logos are custom lettering, and the honest answer is “closest match” rather than an exact one.

When the font you identified is expensive

Identification often ends with a paid answer: the font is Gotham, or Proxima Nova, or a script that costs more than the project budget. You have three honest options.

First, buy the licence if the project justifies it. Second, look for an open-licence alternative that captures the same feel.
