Tattoo Font Generator
Type the name, word, or date you are thinking about and see it rendered across hundreds of real tattoo lettering styles: blackletter, script, calligraphy, gothic, western, and more. These are actual downloadable fonts, not Unicode symbols, so what you preview here is exactly what your artist can print at stencil size.
685 lettering families · every licence verified
Every lettering style above is a real font with a verified commercial licence: download it free from its font page and hand it to your artist. Browse more in tattoo fonts and Old English fonts.
How it works
- 01 Type your name, word, or date in the box.
- 02 Browse the pages of blackletter, script, calligraphy, and gothic previews at a large size.
- 03 Open the font you like, download it free, and bring the file or an actual-size printout to your artist.
Preview in real fonts, then take the file to your artist
Most tattoo font generators show you Unicode lookalike characters that only exist on screen. This one is different: it previews your text in genuine font files from our catalog, spanning the two classic tattoo families, old english blackletter and flowing script, plus engraved serif styles for dates and Roman numerals. When you find one you like, open its page, type your word again at large size, and download the font free. Print it at actual size or send the file to your artist, and the stencil will match the preview exactly.
Every font here is genuinely free, including for your artist
This is the part most font sites blur. A lot of "free tattoo fonts" online are free for personal use only, and a tattoo artist charging you money is commercial use, which technically puts the stencil in license-violation territory. Every font in the DaFontFonts catalog is verified under a license that permits commercial use, mostly the SIL Open Font License, so your artist can use it in paid work, print it on flash sheets, and put the finished tattoo in their portfolio without any permission or payment. You can read the plain-English breakdown of each license on our licenses page.
Choosing lettering that still reads in ten years
Tattoos spread slightly as skin ages, so lettering choices that look sharp on screen can close up on skin. Three practical rules from how ink behaves: favor open letterforms over dense ones (heavy blackletter needs to be sized larger so its tight counters do not fill in), avoid hairline strokes at small sizes since very thin lines are the first to blur, and test your word at the actual size you plan to wear it, not zoomed in. Script styles with connected letters hide minor spreading better than delicate thin scripts. Your artist will have opinions on all of this, which is exactly why handing them a real font file beats handing them a screenshot.
Questions
Is it really free to use one of these fonts for a tattoo?
Yes. Every font in our catalog is verified free for commercial use under licenses like the SIL OFL, Apache 2.0, and CC0. You can download the file, print your design, and get it tattooed at no cost and with no attribution required on the tattoo.
Can my tattoo artist legally use the font in their paid work?
Yes, and this is the point of the catalog. Because these licenses permit commercial use, your artist can charge for the tattoo, reuse the font for other clients, and show the work in their portfolio. Fonts labeled "free for personal use" on other sites do not clearly allow that.
How do I pick lettering that ages well on skin?
Prefer open, well-spaced letterforms, avoid hairline-thin strokes at small sizes, and preview your word at the real size you plan to wear. Dense blackletter works but needs to be larger; connected scripts tolerate the slight spreading of ink over time better than fragile thin scripts.
What should I actually bring to my tattoo appointment?
The downloaded font file plus a printout of your word at actual size, or a PDF with the text converted to outlines. That lets your artist adjust spacing and weight in their own software instead of tracing a low-resolution screenshot.
