Unicode encodes more than 150,000 characters, and only a small slice of them are letters you type every day. The rest include card suits, chess pieces, weather signs, currency marks, and the ornaments that survived from the Zapf Dingbats typeface. Where these render

Almost everything here is old, well-supported Unicode. The stars, hearts, arrows, currency signs, and math operators render as flat text glyphs in bios, documents, spreadsheets, and messages on any modern device. The exceptions are the emoji-listed characters (✨, ⭐, ✅, 🖤), which always draw in color, and characters like ☀ and ☂ that some platforms nudge into emoji presentation. Kaomoji are built from letters across many scripts, Katakana and Kannada included, so they can look slightly off in fonts with weak coverage, though every modern phone handles the classics fine.

Usage ideas

Currency signs make price lists readable in plain text. Math symbols like ≈ and ± are handy in specs and captions. ♛ and ⚡ carry personality in gamer tags and Discord names. One caveat

Symbols are seasoning, not the meal. One ⚡ in a username reads as intent; five read as noise, and screen readers spell all five out.

Are these symbols free to use anywhere?

Yes. Unicode characters are part of a public standard and are not copyrighted, so you can paste them into usernames, bios, documents, and commercial listings. The visual shape comes from whichever font renders it; for physical products, use a font with a commercial-friendly license, which every font on DaFontFonts has.

Why do some symbols look different on my phone than on my laptop?

Each device draws characters with its own fonts, and emoji-listed characters like ✨ get a colored picture instead of a glyph. A symbol can be flat black on a laptop and full color on a phone. If a consistent look matters, prefer plain text symbols like ★, →, and ✓.

Do symbols in usernames hurt discoverability?

Search on most platforms matches the plain letters, so a name like ⚡Nova⚡ is found by typing Nova. The symbols themselves are rarely typed by searchers, so keep the letters of your name intact and use symbols as decoration around them rather than replacements for letters.
