Free alternatives to Minion

Minion (Adobe): Minion, designed by Robert Slimbach in 1990, is a Renaissance-inspired old-style serif built for extended reading. With optical sizes, extensive weights, and excellent spacing, Minion Pro became the default serious book and academic face of the digital era.

Minion Pro and Minion 3 are Adobe typefaces available through Adobe Fonts subscriptions or perpetual licenses. Your right to use them ends if the subscription does, which matters for long-lived projects like books.

Crimson Text was explicitly created as a free alternative in the tradition of Minion and similar book faces. It shares the old-style skeleton and comfortable reading texture.

Source Serif 4 is Adobe's own open-source serif, released under the SIL OFL. It is more transitional than Minion but carries the same professional polish and includes optical sizes.

Spectral is a serif built for screen-first editorial reading with seven weights and italics, covering Minion's range in digital publications.

PT Serif is a sturdy transitional serif that holds up in small print and low-quality reproduction, a practical stand-in where Minion is chosen for reliability rather than beauty.

Lora is a contemporary serif with calligraphic roots, well suited to long-form web reading. It is warmer and more modern than Minion, so it is a match for the role more than the style.

Minion is a trademark of its owner and is not distributed by DaFontFonts. This page recommends independent open-licence typefaces with a comparable feel; they are not copies and render with their own metrics and details.

Questions

Can I use Minion Pro for free?

Only through an active Adobe subscription that includes Adobe Fonts, and only within that subscription's terms. The font files themselves are not free to redistribute or self-host.

What is the best free substitute for Minion in a book?

Crimson Text was designed for exactly this job and reads very close in running text. Source Serif 4 is another strong choice, and as an Adobe-made open font it shares some design sensibility with Minion.
