About Avant Garde

ITC Avant Garde Gothic grew out of the logo Herb Lubalin designed for Avant Garde magazine in the late 1960s. Lubalin and Tom Carnase developed it into a full typeface, released by ITC in 1970. Its letters are built on near-perfect circles, with very tight spacing and a famous set of ligatures and alternate capitals that let designers lock letters together.

Avant Garde is pure 1970s modernism: confident, round and graphic. It became a staple of logos, magazine headlines and advertising, and its clean geometry still feels fresh in fashion, music and retro-inspired branding. It works best large; in long text its round letters can feel wide and loose.

Questrial is built on the same near-perfect circles and monoline strokes, making it the most direct free echo of Avant Garde's geometry. It comes in a single weight, so it cannot reproduce the family's range.

Jost provides strict 1920s-derived geometry with circular bowls and pointed apexes that align with Avant Garde's construction. It is more restrained and lacks the signature ligatures and alternates.

Didact Gothic shares the simple, circular, monoline letterforms in a clean single weight. Its schoolbook plainness means it reads more neutral and less styled than Avant Garde.

Josefin Sans captures the geometric display flavor with elegant thin strokes and period charm, useful for Avant Garde-style headlines. Its small x-height and vintage details push it toward Art Deco.

Poiret One is a decorative geometric display face with hairline circular strokes that evoke Avant Garde's lighter, more stylized settings. It is display-only: one thin weight, unsuitable for text.
