About Papyrus

Chris Costello drew Papyrus by hand in 1982, when he was 23, with a calligraphy pen on textured paper. He wanted letters that looked like they had been written on papyrus two thousand years ago, so the strokes are rough at the edges, the crossbars sit high and the capitals carry small flared serifs. Letraset released it the following year, and it later passed to ITC, which is now part of Monotype.

Because Papyrus ships with macOS and Microsoft Office, it ended up on spa menus, church bulletins, tea packaging and fantasy posters around the world, and famously on a blockbuster film logo. That ubiquity turned it into a design joke, but it still does one job well: instantly signalling something ancient, natural or handmade. For a fresher take on the same mood, the free alternatives below are a better starting point.

Where Papyrus works best

  • Fantasy and historical posters
  • Church and event flyers
  • Egyptian and ancient themes

Caudex was developed for typesetting medieval manuscripts, and its slightly rough, bookish character is the closest open match for Papyrus's ancient-document mood. The letterforms themselves are far more conventional.

Uncial Antiqua is based on uncial scripts from late antiquity, so it genuinely evokes early manuscripts. It is a loose match: more formal and calligraphic than Papyrus's scratchy hand.

Macondo is an organic decorative face with flowing, hand-drawn energy. It shares Papyrus's handcrafted irregularity while looking folk-art rather than ancient.

Cinzel is a loose match from a different angle: classical Roman inscription capitals. If Papyrus was chosen to say old and dignified, Cinzel says it with far more polish.

Questions

Is Papyrus font free?

It is free to use if it came with your Mac or Microsoft Office, for documents and images you create. It is not free to redistribute, embed in apps or serve on a website. Uncial Antiqua and Macondo are free alternatives with a similar handmade, ancient feel.

Can I use Papyrus for commercial use?

You can use your bundled copy in printed or exported designs you sell, such as flyers or images. Using it in a logo you trademark, an app or a website font stack is safer with a license bought from Monotype.

Who created the Papyrus font?

Chris Costello designed Papyrus in 1982. It was released by Letraset and is now owned and licensed by ITC, part of Monotype.

Why is Papyrus so famous?

It came preinstalled on millions of computers, so it appeared everywhere from spa menus to a major film logo. Its overuse made it one of the most recognised, and most joked about, fonts in the world.
