About Canela

Canela was designed by Miguel Reyes for Commercial Type, with contributions from Panagiotis Haratzopoulos and Ilya Ruderman. Reyes started from the forms of Caslon and kept stripping the serifs away, until only a slight flare remained at the end of each stroke. The result sits between a serif and a sans, with the calm, monumental feel of letters cut in stone.

The collection has four families: Canela for display, Canela Condensed, Canela Deck for subheads and Canela Text for reading sizes, each running from Thin to Black with italics. Its soft contrast and elegant curves made it a favourite for fashion labels, beauty packaging, wedding stationery and premium editorial design, where it reads as refined without feeling old-fashioned.
