About Cooper Black

Oswald Bruce Cooper designed Cooper Black in Chicago, and Barnhart Brothers & Spindler released it in 1922. Cooper wanted a bold face that felt friendly rather than heavy, so he gave it soft, rounded serifs and blunt, blobby shapes. Microsoft's notes point out its quirks: very small counters, the backward tilt inside the O and Q, and oval dots on the i and j.

Cooper Black was a hit with advertisers almost immediately and has come back in waves ever since: on 1970s album covers and food packaging, in retro diner signs, and today in bakery, coffee and streetwear branding. Its weight and warmth make short words impossible to miss, but it needs room to breathe and a strong contrasting background.

Free alternatives to Cooper Black

Open-licence fonts with a comparable feel, every one verified free for commercial use and downloadable from DaFontFonts.

Alfa Slab One delivers a similar wall of ultra-bold warmth. It is a slab serif with more contrast and sharper serifs than Cooper's melted forms, so it is a match for weight and presence rather than exact shape.

Titan One captures Cooper Black's rounded heaviness in a sans-serif skeleton. If what you want from Cooper is the friendly fat-face feel, Titan One gets close without the serifs.

Chewy is a loose match: a bouncy, rounded display face that shares Cooper Black's playful weight but reads more cartoonish and casual.

Shrikhand is a fat, exuberant display face with an italic lean, drawing on Gujarati letterform traditions rather than Cooper's American roots. A loose match, but it works for the same loud, warm poster jobs.

Cherry Cream Soda is a chunky retro display font with soft edges and a mid-century American diner feel, adjacent to the nostalgia Cooper Black carries. Best at large sizes only.
