About Comic Sans

Vincent Connare designed Comic Sans at Microsoft, starting in October 1994. He noticed that cartoon-style software was using stiff drafting lettering in speech balloons, so he drew a casual face modelled on the hand lettering in comic books. It was first used in Microsoft 3D Movie Maker, then shipped with the Windows 95 Plus! pack and later became one of the original Core fonts for the Web.

Because it sat on every Windows computer, Comic Sans spread to school worksheets, bake sale flyers, shop signs and even official documents, which made it a running joke among designers. Yet its open, irregular letters are genuinely easy to read on screen, and many teachers and readers with dyslexia find it friendly. Used for the right job, casual, playful and informal, it still works.

Comic Neue was created by Craig Rozynski specifically as a refined successor to Comic Sans, keeping the casual friendliness while cleaning up the letterforms. It is the direct free replacement.

Patrick Hand is based on the designer's own handwriting: neat, rounded, and warm. It reads as genuinely handwritten where Comic Sans reads as cartoon lettering.

Schoolbell has the loose, classroom-note feel that makes Comic Sans popular with teachers. Single weight, best at medium and large sizes.

Delius is a tidy, rounded handwriting font with even strokes, close to Comic Sans in weight and rhythm but calmer in personality.

Kalam is a handwriting style in three weights supporting Latin and Devanagari, useful when you need the informal tone with real bold options, which Comic Sans lacks.

Questions

Is Comic Sans free?

It is free to use on Windows and with Microsoft Office for documents and graphics you create. It is not free to redistribute or embed in apps, games or websites. Comic Neue is a free, open-source redesign you can use anywhere.

Who designed Comic Sans?

Vincent Connare designed Comic Sans at Microsoft in 1994, inspired by the lettering in comic books.

Why do people hate Comic Sans?

Mostly because it was overused in places that needed a serious tone, like business documents and public notices. The font itself is clear and friendly; the problem is using it for the wrong job.

Is Comic Sans good for dyslexia?

Many readers with dyslexia say its irregular, open letter shapes are easier to tell apart, and some teachers use it for that reason. Research results are mixed, so it is best to let readers choose.
