About Brush Script

Brush Script was designed by Robert E. Smith and released by American Type Founders in 1942. As Microsoft describes it, the heavy, informal letters look as though they were written with a brush, and the lowercase joins up like real handwriting. It captured the look of mid-century sign painting and advertising lettering.

Brush Script was everywhere in the 1950s, on shop windows, diner menus and product ads, and its inclusion in Microsoft Office brought it back into countless flyers and signs. Today it reads as nostalgic and friendly. Use the capitals only at the start of words; in all caps it becomes hard to read.
