About Gill Sans

Eric Gill, the English sculptor and letter cutter, designed Gill Sans for Monotype in 1928. It grew out of Edward Johnston's lettering for the London Underground, which Gill had worked on, and it combines a sans serif with classical Roman proportions. Details like the spectacle-shaped lowercase g and the flared R give it a distinctly British warmth.

Gill Sans spread quickly across British railways, book publishing and broadcasting, and it is often described as Britain's unofficial national typeface. Microsoft Office includes it as Gill Sans MT, and Monotype released an expanded Gill Sans Nova in 2015 for modern use.

Free alternatives to Gill Sans

Cabin openly cites Edward Johnston and Eric Gill as influences, so it inherits the humanist proportions and rounded, friendly forms of Gill Sans. It adds modern touches like a taller x-height and slight rounding that make it steadier on screen.

Lato shares Gill Sans's humanist warmth and classical capital proportions while staying more uniform in stroke and spacing. It lacks the eccentric details, like Gill's g and R, which is either a loss of character or a gain in versatility.

Karla is a grotesque with humanist quirks and slightly irregular spacing that recalls Gill Sans's hand-drawn unevenness. It is narrower and more contemporary, better suited to interfaces than book covers.

Fira Sans provides the humanist skeleton and open apertures that make Gill Sans readable, in a much larger range of weights and widths. Its forms are more standardized, so it reads as neutral European rather than distinctly British.

PT Sans is a humanist sans with moderate contrast and open, legible forms in the same functional tradition as Gill Sans's text weights. It is plainer and more condensed, tuned for signage and small print.
