About Century Gothic

Century Gothic was produced by Monotype in 1990 and 1991. Microsoft describes it as based on Monotype's 20th Century, drawn by Sol Hess between 1936 and 1947, with an enlarged x-height and changes for digital output. Its proportions also follow ITC Avant Garde Gothic, so it carries the same clean, round 1920s geometric spirit as Futura.

The letters are wide, light and very open, with a circular O, a single-storey a and generous spacing. That makes Century Gothic look friendly and modern in headlines, invitations and short blocks of text, though it gets tiring in long paragraphs. Because it has shipped with Microsoft Office for decades, it is one of the most common fonts in school projects, resumes, wedding stationery and small business logos.

Free alternatives to Century Gothic

Open-licence fonts with a comparable feel, every one verified free for commercial use and downloadable from DaFontFonts.

Questrial has the same round, wide, single-story geometric feel as Century Gothic Regular. It comes in one weight, so it covers text and light display use but not bold settings.

Poppins matches Century Gothic's circular bowls and adds a full weight range with italics, making it the more practical choice for a whole document or site.

Didact Gothic was designed for schoolbook legibility with simple, open geometric forms. It reads slightly plainer than Century Gothic but works well at text sizes.

Jost is a Futura-style geometric sans, and since Century Gothic itself channels that same tradition, Jost lands close in tone while being a bit more refined.

Montserrat is rounder and wider than most grotesques and covers Century Gothic's role in headings and invitations, with far more weights to work with.

Questions

Is Century Gothic free?

It is free to use if you have Microsoft Office, for documents and graphics you create. It is not free to redistribute, embed in apps or use as a web font. Questrial and Poppins are free alternatives you can use anywhere.

Can I use Century Gothic in a logo?

You can design with your Office copy, but for a logo you trademark or use widely, a license from Monotype is the safe route. A free alternative like Questrial avoids the question entirely.

What font is similar to Century Gothic?

Questrial is the closest free match. Poppins and Didact Gothic share its round geometry, and Jost is a good pick if you want something closer to Futura.

Who made Century Gothic?

Monotype produced Century Gothic in 1990 and 1991, based on the 20th Century typeface Sol Hess drew between 1936 and 1947.
