About Copperplate

Copperplate Gothic was released in 1901 by American Type Founders and is credited to Frederic W. Goudy. Despite the name, it is not a script: it is a set of wide capitals with tiny, sharp serifs that imitate the look of letters engraved into copper printing plates. As Microsoft notes, a true lowercase was never designed, so the smaller letters are small capitals.

Its crisp, formal look made it a long-time favourite for business cards, stationery, law firms, banks and engraved signs. Because it ships with Microsoft Office, it also appears on countless restaurant menus, real estate signs and small business logos that want to look established and trustworthy.
