About Impact

Impact was designed by Geoffrey Lee and issued in 1965 by Stephenson Blake, the Sheffield type foundry. It belongs to the 1960s wave of very bold, tightly condensed headline faces, and was often paired with Schmalfette Grotesk, which is even narrower. Microsoft licensed it as one of the original Core fonts for the Web in 1996, and it has shipped with Windows ever since.

Its letters are tall, narrow and almost solid, with tiny counters and a huge x-height, so a short word can fill a wide space and still be read from far away. That is why Impact became the classic meme font, set in white with a black outline, and why it still shows up on YouTube thumbnails, sale banners and protest signs. There is only one style, so for a full system of weights you need one of the free alternatives below.

Where Impact works best

  • Memes and reaction images
  • YouTube and social thumbnails
  • Sale banners and posters
  • Short, loud headlines

Anton is the go-to free Impact substitute: a single heavy, tightly condensed sans reworked from classic advertising typefaces. At headline sizes the silhouette is very close.

Archivo Black matches Impact's blunt weight but sits wider, giving headlines the same force with a little more air. Useful when Impact feels too compressed.

Fjalla One is a medium-contrast condensed display sans, slightly friendlier than Impact, and it stays readable a bit smaller than the heavier options.

Oswald is a condensed gothic family with multiple weights, so it covers Impact-style headlines while also giving you lighter styles Impact never had.

Bebas Neue is caps-only but shares the tall, compressed poster energy Impact is used for. A common pick for meme text, YouTube thumbnails, and banners.
